What are some tips to buy your own Health Insurance?

Seeing the wide variety of Mediclaim policies that are available in the market, you find yourself confused, worried and desperate for some sort of help! So here are some tips for you to buy health insurance:

  • Payment Options

Payment options are the first thing that you should look out for, other than the Premiums, when you want to buy a Mediclaim policy. Though most Health Insurance companies now-a-days offer the Cashless facility as a payment option, it is best if you inquire beforehand as the cashless mode of payment offers you a hassle-free route of claiming your due.

What to look out for: Health Insurance Companies that favor the Cashless mode of payment.

  • Network Hospitals

Network Hospitals is a group of hospitals that have tied up with a Health Insurance Company or a TPA (Third Party Administrator). The main benefit provided by the Network Hospitals is that they offer the cashless facility that lets you get admitted for free and thus reduces the financial burden on you during the hospitalization.

What to look out for: Opt for a health Insurance Company that has a higher number of Network Hospitals which again include a high number of reputed hospitals.

What are the steps to buy health insurance?

Health insurance needs differ at different ages but the need for health insurance remains. So here is a step by step guide for buying health insurance:

  • Read the fine print

Now, that you have decided what you need to buy and from whom, the time comes to actually purchase the policy by paying the premium. But before you do that make sure you have gone through the policy wordings carefully, including the fine print. This includes, the waiting period, information about the coverage of pre-existing diseases, information about the renewal of health insurance policy, room rent limits, information about the reimbursement of pre and post hospitalization expenses, etc.

  • Keep a reminder

It is important to keep a reminder of the policy renewal date either on your mobile, your calendar, Outlook, and even tell one of your family members to do the same. This is to keep you from forgetting the policy renewal date, so that the policy doesn’t relapse. If the policy relapses, you would have to buy a new one, which means that your waiting period will start afresh from the new policy.

How to buy health insurance?

Buying health insurance when you are young and healthy is a smart option and a necessary one, so go buy yourself a health insurance policy:

  • Compare and align Health insurance

Make a chart and mention the various companies offering the plans best suited to your needs, write the policy features against each, and compare the coverage amounts. There may be differences, like while some companies may offer coverage of pre existing diseases after four years, others will offer after two years. Based on your needs, if it’s for senior citizens, you may opt for the two year policy, but then again, you would have to check the other terms and conditions, exclusions and clauses before making a decision. The point is to do your own homework thoroughly.

  • Who to buy from?

Once you have zeroed in on the policy you wish to buy, question arises as to whom you buy health insurance from. Should it be directly from the company, the broker or the agent? Well, our take is that, among the three, the broker can be your best bet. The reason is that while the agents may be biased towards their respective companies, brokers can give you an unbiased opinion, explaining the positives and negatives and giving you exhaustive comparisons between the Health Insurance plans offered by different companies.

What are some tips to buy health insurance in India?

Health Insurance is the medical insurance provided to you by an insurance company, wherein it reimburses the medical expenses you incur as a result of your valid hospitalization. So here are some tips to buy health insurance in India:

  • Understand your needs

First thing first, you need to ascertain your need to buy health insurance. Given the uncertainty and rising healthcare costs being reasons enough, you need to know who will be covered under the policy you take. If you wish to cover your family together, you may opt for a family floater while if you are going for only covering yourself then an individual policy would suffice. For your parents, you can opt for Senior citizen policy with shorter waiting period for the pre-existing diseases to be covered

  • An exhaustive research:

Once you have ascertained who you wish to be covered under the health insurance policy, you then begin looking for the right kind of policy across the different options available under different companies. A Health Insurance broker will be the best person to buy health insurance policy from because he has an in-depth knowledge about many health insurance companies and will guide you towards a policy that is right for you.

Re-embursement of Mediclaim policy No. 311200/34/09/11/00000422, Member Id. N90864920

Sir,

This is regarding my above stated policy of The New India Assurance Company. My wife was admited in the Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute For Liver Renal And Digestive Diseases hospital, New Delhi on dated 25-jan-2010 upto 29-jan-2010 for the treatment of RECURRENT UTI, JEJUNAL WALL THICKENING , WORM INFESTATION AND (OVARIAN CYST).

Even if it was told to us that this policy is cashless we have to pay Rs.25000/- in advance to the hospital before admission.  As soon as we got admitted we did all the formalities required for mediclaim. Two days late we got a fax saying Cashless facility of Rs.20000 for the treatment of UTI WITH PYELONEPHRITIS has been passed and Kindly send the final bill+D/s for extension.

My final bill in the hospital was Rs.38096/- thus we send all the bill+d/s for extension but in reply they said that CREDIT FACILITY DENIED FOR UTI WITH PYELONEPHRITIS WITH LT OVARIAN CYST. HENCE CASHLESS IS DENIED AND PREVIOUS LETTER STANDS CANELLED.

As our claim was denied we did arrange the full amout of Rs.38096/- by own and deposited in hospital and get discharged.

Later we submitted all the documents to the New India Assurance Policy claiming for the re-embursement on 11-Feb-2010 claming Rs.50,022/- (including all the expences done within 1month before the admission in hospital).
We got the re-embursement of Rs.40205/- on dated 18-Apr-2010.
The amount of Rs.9817/- was deducted as follows :
RS 400/- DIET CHARGES NOT PAYABLE, RS 1456/- BILL NOT ATTACHED,RS 30+5 TAP+BANDAGES NOT PAYABLE, RS 14/- DT 24/01/10 MEDICINE PATIENT NAME NOT MENTION, RS 350+482 DT 16/12/09+25/11/09 MEDICINE PRE 30 DAYS AS PER POLICY,RS 550/- (RS 50+50+50+50+50+50+50+50+50+50+50) INJECTION ADMINITRATION CHARGES, RS 10/- ID BRACELET NOT PAYABLE,RS 350/- DT 6/02/10 CONSULTATION CHARGES PRESCRIPTION NOT ATTACHED, RS 1000/- CONSULTATION CHARGES AS PER POLICY,RS 550+800+1100 DT HBSAG+HIV+HCV ELISA NOT PAYABLE, RS 750/- USG RELAITED TO OVARIAN CYSTS NOT PAYABLE, RS 370/- DT 17/12/09 LAB TEST PRE 30 DAYS AS PER POLICY,RS 1600/- ROOM RENT AS PER POLICY.

Now on dated 19-June-2010, we again claimed Rs.8899/- for the expenses we have done within 1 month of discharge and also added all the papers due to which some amount was deducted in my previous claim. But now the claim was rejected giving the reason as follows :
ON SCRUTINY OF THE DOCUMENTS, WE ARE OBSERVE AS UNDER: INSURED WAS ADMITTED ON 25/01/2010 AND DISCHARGED ON 29/01/2010 WHILE PRE & POST CLAIM DOCUMENT SUBMITTED ON 19/06/2010. AS PER POLICY GUIDELINES OF INSURANCE COMPANY CLAIM SHOULD REACH US WITHIN 90 DAYS STARTING THE DATE OF DISCHARGE OF HOSPITALISATION. THESE CONDITIONS ARE NOT FULFILLED BY THE INSURED. THIS CLAIM FALLS OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF THE POLICY COVERAGE AND HENCE NON TENABLE (AS PER CLAUSE 11.0). RECURRENT UTI, JEJUNAL WALL THICKENING , WORM INFESTATION AND (OVARIAN CYST)

Thus I have lost Rs.9817/- in my previous claim and Rs.8899/- in this claim.
1. I have not got any guideline of insurance company at the time of insuring nither I found it anywhere on internet also.
2. Some amount was deducted from my 1st claim i.e. Diet Charges Rs.400/-, Injection Adminitration Charges Rs.550/-, Consultation Charges Rs.1000/-, RS 550+800+1100 DT HBSAG+HIV+HCV ELISA not payable should be given to me as it was all the test which come negative and was done by the doctors in the hospital to clear their doubts. It was not advised by me to do that.
3. My was was not well even after discharge and due to this I got delayed in submiting the documents for second claim. This should be given to me.

Please help me in the above matter

Bribe

Following an Ear operation, I had claimed my insurance on 16/5/10 for a total of Rs. 50000/- (Fifty thousand only) from Royal Sundaram Health Insurance Co. Ltd.. The insurance investigator [Name – A.K. Bajaj, Address - Shop no. 9, B21/22, Amrit Anand, Sector 11, Opp New India Bank, Shanti Nagar Mira Rd. (e) Mumbai – 401107]assigned by the company has demanded for Rs. 10000/- (Ten thousand only) as bribe to approve my claim.
It is very disappointing that a company like Royal Sundaram Health Insurance Co. Ltd. deals with such goons. I am sure that a few of its employees also are hand in hand with him or maybe your whole company is a fraud.I hope this situation is resolved at the earliest and the guilty are reprimanded.

Dear friends, never take a policy from star health. That is my experience. I have submitted claim No: 7320

Now i really got desperate and i feel that i will never get a refund from them. So i am planning to give a complaint against star health , trivandum, plammoodu office in consumer court. so never get in trap with star insurance hearing the sweet words of agents. a very very bad company.

Mediclaim not passed from past 7 months

This is regarding the inconvenience I am facing due to the worst & worst service of Cholamandalam Health Insurance Company. I have submitted my maternity bills to cholamandalam health insurance Company Mumbai (Vashi) off. to Mr. Virendra Garg (Branch Head- Vashi). After a long follow up I received an unacceptable excuse of misplacing the bills which I had submitted. Then, again the follow up started from my side & second excuse given of endorsement of my child. After that again the long follow up started and I received a verbal commitment by Mr. Virendra Garg (Branch Head-Vashi) that the formalities are fulfilled and the check payment procedures are in progress which I will be getting in approx. 10 days. Then I waited for a long and at the end of my patience I called up to the above mentioned person and received a comment that the claim would not be passed. These whole irritating things are happening from past 7 months. This is really very worst & unprofessional thing to do. So, I think instead of passing the claim of the needful people, Cholamandalam is searching 1000 reasons not to pass the claims . So, I request you to fairly do the things, which would not affect your business badly. Kindly do the needful at earliest.
